How To’s Day: Passport Cover Tutorial

June 10th, 2014 by Camelot Fabrics

Hi everyone!

Happy Tuesday!! We hope everyone is having a great start to the week. It’s Father’s Day this weekend!! It’s the day to celebrate the man who has always been there for us, no matter what. And this includes (but is not limited to!) killing spiders, shoveling the snow in -30 C weather, making us his famous spaghetti when mom was sick, miraculously fixing that hairdryer that you thought you broke, and loving us unconditionally. We appreciate everything that you do for us, Dads – thank you for everything! :)

What better way to show your dad how much he means to you by making something from the heart. We have an awesome Passport Cover Tutorial for this week’s How To’s Day that would be the perfect gift for that inspiring man in your life. This sleek passport cover is such an essential for any avid traveler – there is nothing worse than rummaging through your things while at the airport trying to find your passport. As if airports weren’t stressful enough! With our cover, your passport will be protected…and with the pretty fabric, easy to find! The elastic band adds extra security, so you can slip your airline ticket and other essentials inside too. And with the inner pockets, you can hide away extra money or cards. We especially love our passport cover with our navy and tan prints from Paisley Please; stylish but neutral enough for a man.

Supplies:

– Shell: fat quarter of Paisley Please quilting cotton (44” wide) from Camelot Fabrics in 4140704 #2 – Navy Connect the Dots
– Lining: fat quarter of Paisley Please quilting cotton (44” wide) from Camelot Fabrics in 4140707 #3 – Tan Lattice
– (1) medium “ouchless” hair elastic
– 8” x 6” of lightweight cardboard/heavy cardstock
– Basic sewing supplies: sewing machine & thread, iron & pressing surface. scissors & fabric shears, straight ruler, needle & coordinating embroidery floss, and a fabric marker

Notes:

– Please wash, dry & iron your fabric before beginning.
– Unless otherwise indicated, sew all seams with a 1/4” seam allowance.

CUTTING:

1. Cut (2) 3-5/8” x 5” rectangles from your cardstock.

2. Cut (1) 15” wide x 5-3/4” tall rectangle and (1) 7-1/2” wide x 5-1/2” tall rectangle from your Shell fabric.

3. Cut (1) 15” wide x 5-3/4” tall rectangle from your Lining fabric.

ASSEMBLY:

1. Press & sew a 1/4” rolled hem on the right-hand edge of the longer Shell rectangle.

2. Baste the Shell rectangles together with an 1/8” seam as shown, with the longer rectangle on top and both fabrics’ Right Sides facing up. The shorter rectangle’s left-hand edge is staggered 7-1/2” from the longer rectangle’s left-hand edge.

The finished Shell unit should be 15” wide.

3. Cut your hair elastic to make (1) 5-1/2” – 6” elastic chord. Position the top & bottom of this piece against the top & bottom edges of the Shell, 4” from the left-hand edge, so that it is very slightly stretched when the fabric is laid flat. Baste the elastic in place with an 1/8” seam, and trim any excess.

4. Sew the Shell unit to the Lining rectangle, Right Sides together, along the top & bottom edges. Press the seams open and turn the unit Right Side out.

5. Fold the unit in half widthwise & press to mark the center of the passport cover; unfold.

6. Topstitch a vertical seam on either side of the center fold line, 1/8” from the fold.

7. Carefully slide your pieces of cardboard into the tube of fabric, inserting one from each end, so that they are snug against the center seams.

8. Tuck in & topstitch the ends of the unit closed.

9. Fold the ends of the unit toward the center, using the outer edges of the cardboard pieces as your fold lines. Edge-stitch in place by hand. You may want to use whipstitch or ladder stitch in regular thread, or add a subtle decorative element with a simple basket stitch in coordinating embroidery floss.

[…] If you’re going to get into working with fabrics, why not go all out with the visuals? Choose something bright and covered in an interesting pattern! That way, no matter how simple the actual sewn cover is, it’ll still be eye catching and impressive. Check out this design by Camelot Fabrics! […]
